Diptyque – Menthe Verte (Green Mint) Candle – Review and Photos

Diptyque Menthe Verte Candle – 6.5 0z

Although Diptyque’s Menthe Verte is not new to its collection, the name  sounded refreshingly different. I bought the candle on a whim after a long spell of burning through woody candles. I hadn’t heard much about Menthe Verte in particular, but I interpreted the name as “mint green” using my college French, which sounded good. Diptyque, however, sub-titles it as “Green Mint” instead of “mint green,” which elegantly turns it from a color into a scent.

Diptyque writes that Menthe Verte’s “bright and crisp freshness is transcended with a hint of spice.” Hearing “spice” made me think I would be getting clove or cinnamon or even pepper, which I was a little uncertain about. What I actually smell is wonderful, though, and I’m very glad I don’t smell “spice” in this candle. Perhaps things are getting lost in translation, but once again I find myself smelling something different than what Diptyque describes.

This season Diptyque sold (and promptly sold out of) a limited edition candle by the name of “Thé” (Tea), that apparently mimicked the smell of “black, strong and spicy tea that is beloved by the Russians and the British.” In my mind, Menthe Verte is Thé’s counterpart– instead of black tea it’s mint herbal tea, beloved by so many Americans.

Menthe Verte is minty in the way a mint leaf is minty, but not in the way an Andes mint is minty. There is no über-sweet peppermint or wintergreen here. This is not a gourmand candle. This mint (tea) is served without sugar or milk to dilute the pure herbal, fresh smell. Along with the fresh mint comes the smell of herbs present in herbal tea (I admit ignorance about what exactly goes on in herbal tea manufacturing).

But I do know this: I won’t hesitate to burn Menthe Verte when guests are around, especially when the kitchen needs some freshening up. It’s a great alternative to the lemon-verbena smell of Diptyque’s other kitchen favorite, Verviene. I am pretty confident I’ll be using Menthe Verte a lot this Spring. I’d better add this to my list of favorites, alongside Feu de Bois and Vanille!

I’m glad you like the reference chart. I’ll be reviewing some Diptyque florals later this week, and the chart will continue to get filled in.
