I was excited as soon as I saw Coola’s new lip care line, Mineral Liplux SPF 30, consisting of tinted balms with physical sunscreen ($18 for .15 oz). There are six colors in this line-up, including:
Tan Line (Rich Coral) (Honey Peach Flavor)
Nude Beach (Light Pink) (Caramel Flavor)
Skinny Dip (Sheer Tint) (Natural Earl Gray Flavor)
Summer Crush (Deep Pink) (Minty Rose Flavor)
Bonfire (Copper Bronze) (Fresh Fig Flavor)
Firecracker (Bold Red) (Sweet Hibiscus Flavor)
Each shade is scented differently, with natural flavors.
I bought Summer Crush and Nude Beach because I like pink. I am curious about the look of Skinny Dip, because “Sheer Tint” gives the impression it is tinted with some color. What color though…?
I will tell you straight up that I would not favor these balms or keep them in rotation if not for the SPF. Although they are excellent in the moisturizing and balm area, the colors are so washed out that I can barely tell which I am wearing. The texture of the balm is waxy, which I like in a balm, however I don’t like waxy lip color. I feel like these Mineral Lipluxes are a strange hybrid between a balm I can put on with no mirror and a lip color that needs to go within the lines. I really prefer sheer color with a jelly finish instead of a matte pigment. So in a sense these colors are matte, in that the finish isn’t glossy and you can really see (especially in the Nude Beach swatch on my lips) where I applied the balm.
I also would prefer these without scent. I almost think the scent cheapens them. Summer Crush is scented with an oddly herbal “Minty Rose” and Nude Beach with a very sweet “Caramel.” Though I could have done without the scents it’s a not a deal breaker. The scent fades after application, which is good because I don’t care for this incarnation of rose smell one bit.
On the up side, the balms offer moderate to good physical sun protection, at SPF 30. I have looked everywhere and had a tough time finding anything that beats SPF 30 in a lip product (except for Colorescience Sunforgettable Lip Shine at SPF 35 – LOVE!). Also the Mineral Liplux balms come wonderfully packaged in heavy metal tubes with a long cap that twists onto the bottom for security. This is a great thing if you’re trying to keep out the sand at the beach, or if your balms tend to end up mushed to the bottom of your bag…
